"With Dreams as Fuel, We Made A Grand Pursuit"

Tony Westlund is an artist of many avenues. He has had creative ventures in black and white photography, drawing and painting, along the way dabbling in faux finishing, furniture building, and experimental music. Beginning with surrealism done with oil paint, he booked, promoted his first art show at age 19.  Although it wasn’t a gallery show, but rather a record shop in Tacoma Washington , it was a catalyst for what has become a penchant for the alternative space.  Whether it’s a clothing store, an upscale bar, or a funky hair salon, Tony finds fans amongst those who encounter his latest artistic pursuit, stencilism.

 He begins with an old photograph, one that might define an era, or have a feeling of extreme nostalgia.  He then creates an enlarged stencil from that original image, sometimes using multiple layers to separate values.  With the stencil cut, and composition in mind, he juxtaposes colors of a modern variety to his hand-built canvases, using spray-paint to apply the stenciled imagery.  The resulting painting is evocative of the sensations associated with a memory of a time from many years past.
